Safety and Security – Travel advice

As with any major city, staying aware of your surroundings and taking some basic precautions can help ensure your visit to São Paulo is safe and enjoyable. Here are some safety tips to keep in mind during your stay.

  • Stay alert in public spaces: The most common incidents affecting tourists in São Paulo are theft and pickpocketing. While exploring the city, be mindful of your belongings, particularly in crowded areas such as public transportation, markets, and popular tourist spots. Keep your bags zipped and close to your body, and avoid displaying valuables like jewelry, cameras, or large amounts of cash. Avoid walking around with your smartphone in your hand and never leave your belongings unattended in places like shopping malls, cafés, and restaurants. Please take extra care around the following areas:
    • Avenida Paulista
    • the red light district located on Rua Augusta (north of Avenida Paulista)
    • Catedral da Sé
    • Praça da República
    • Estação da Luz metro area, where Cracolândia is located. Cracolândia is one of the world’s largest open drug scenes, right in the middle of São Paulo. Please avoid this area!
  • Use trusted transportation: To get around the city, use reputable transportation options such as registered taxis, ride-sharing services like Uber, or the official public transportation system. Avoid accepting rides from unregistered vehicles. When using ride-sharing services, always check whether the vehicle licence plate number and the driver in the car match what is displayed in the app.
  • Be cautious with ATMs: When withdrawing cash, use ATMs located inside banks, shopping malls, or well-lit, secure areas. Avoid using ATMs in isolated locations, especially at night.
  • Secure your accommodations: Ensure that your hotel or accommodation has good security measures in place. Always lock your doors and windows, use the safe for valuables, and be cautious about sharing your accommodation details with strangers.
  • Avoid unfamiliar areas at night: While São Paulo has many vibrant neighbourhoods, some areas may be less safe, particularly after dark. Stick to well-known, well-lit areas, and if you’re unsure about a location, ask your hotel or local contacts for advice.
  • Stay informed: Keep an eye on local news and updates from the congress organisers for any important information regarding safety or changes in the event schedule.

By taking these simple precautions, you can focus on enjoying your time in São Paulo and making the most of your congress experience. We wish you a safe and productive stay!
